If you were to look at my Netflix watch list, it’s possible that you’d wonder how I have time to do anything else! It’s constantly running in the corner of my screen while I’m working on my computer and the only time I really turn it off, is if I’m writing or coding…as both involve my full concentration!
From time to time, I stop what I’m doing and put the show on full-screen mode to enjoy it to its fullest…but the reality is, I’m a multitasker and require music or movies in the background while I work. Somehow…the chaos works for me and I get the job done…plus, I’m entertained in the process!
This last month or so, it’s possible I’ve been searching for a strong female role model as many of the shows I’ve been watching are female based!
Here’s what I’ve been watching…
Drop Dead Diva
Drop Dead Diva ran for six seasons, ending in 2014. I completely missed it when it was on mainstream TV but am so happy that Netflix has it on its roster of shows. The story begins with a beautiful model who has the world at her fingertips until she’s suddenly killed in a car crash and returns in the body of an overweight lawyer. The entire show focuses on the meaning of beauty…inside and out. I had true laugh out loud moments as well as a couple of tears. While the premise of the show is a bit crazy, I was totally wrapped up in the stories and entertained by the 78 episodes. If you’re looking for something fun and entertaining with a few twists that has you automatically playing the next episode…then this is a great series to get into.
How to Get Away with Murder
After a recommendation from my youngest, I decided to check out How to Get Away with Murder…a show I might otherwise have overlooked as the title really didn’t do anything for me (but that might be partly due to watching Making of a Murderer which I was glued to and have regrets about ever having watched!) How to Get Away with Murder is in its third season…the first two now on Netflix and the third on weekly television. It’s produced by Shonda Rhimes…so right there you know it’s likely fantastic! The show is about Annalise Keating, a law professor who works with five “chosen” students, and a murder plot that will have you both in awe and a little bit horrified. The twists and turns are pretty unreal and the various lies that unfold will leave you wondering how anyone can keep anything straight…most especially anyone trying to get away with murder!
Possibly due to the fact that I boarded the Disney Magic for a tour last week while it was in port in Halifax, I jumped on the Disney train and watched Disney’s Maleficent and Tangled this weekend.
Maleficent
New to Netflix in September, Maleficent tells the back story of Princess Aurora…otherwise known as Sleeping Beauty. If you recall from childhood stories, Sleeping Beauty pricks her finger on a spinning wheel and goes into a deep sleeping spell that can only be broken by love’s true kiss. Maleficent, played by Angelina Jolie, is the story behind the spell as it turns out, Maleficent is the “evil witch” who cast the spell on the baby to begin with. The movie tells the story of betrayal and revenge…and the twists and turns that result from both.
Tangled
With 70 feet of magical hair, Rapunzel has been locked in a tower for her entire life! Now, a teenager, she’s looking to escape the tower and discover the world outside. Tangled is the story of her escape, what she discovers, who she trusts and finding love as she searches for freedom. The animated show is filled with wonderful Disney characters including a lovely pet chameleon and a hilarious horse. This movie was a complete break from reality and a reminder to me that Disney movies are still every bit as wonderful at 48 as they were when I was 8!
I quite enjoy watching shows and movies with a strong female character whether she’s fighting for revenge, looking for romance or losing her mind! There’s something about how women use their inner strength to make a difference in the world that inspires me to keep plugging away and fighting the good fight.

In a few weeks, on November 4th, The Crown will be released on Netflix and I’m eagerly anticipating its arrival.
On the 25th, the much anticipated Gilmore Girls: A Year in the LIfe is released at midnight and I’ll be grabbing my Luke’s coffee and watching late into the night! I simply can’t wait to see what’s been going on in Stars Hollow since we last caught up.
Will you be watching The Crown and Gilmore Girls? What are your recommendations for Netflix shows with a strong female role model?
Disclaimer: I receive special perks as part of my affiliation with Netflix….however, as always, opinions and stories are my own.
