I received an email from a Nigerian Prince (though in this case, I use the term quite lightly), claiming that he’s hacked my computer, installed software to watch me through my computer’s camera, and somehow, managed to catch me watching a video that apparently I had no business watching!
He tells me I’m not to go to the authorities of any kind as there’s no way they’ll be able to trace him and also…he’s BLACKMAILING ME! Apparently, I’m to send him $3200 using Bitcoin, within the next 24 hours, or all of the video he has of me will be sent to my list of contacts that he’s stolen from my computer.
He LEGIT knows one of the passwords that I often use and he’s listed it as proof that he’s hacked my account!
I know your secret and I have evidence of this. I’m going to cut to the chase. You do not know me and no one hired me to investigate you. It’s your misfortune that I stumbled across your blunder. More to the point, I know xxxxxx, is your password.
HOLY CRAP PEOPLE! I THINK THIS IS REAL!
I gotta go full-out honest with this one…when I received this email, there was a wee moment…maybe two…where I hard-core panicked! I mean HE HAD MY PASSWORD! My REAL password! The one I use for banking along with other things I’ve logged into through the years.
Could it be? Am I being recorded? Did I even watch any porn in the last few years? I mean…there were a few risqué shows on Netflix but would any recording of me REALLY be all that bad? Could the videos he stole be contorted to look worse than they are? Did my kids borrow my computer? What if I don’t send the money…would he really share videos with everyone I know? What could he actually have on me and IS HE WATCHING ME NOW?
Here’s what to do if you receive an email or see something on social media when you aren’t entirely sure if it’s real or not but it very well could be…
- First things first…DON’T CLICK A THING!
- THINK before you act.
There are a TON of scams out there so before you click on a link, share with your friends or send someone your hard-eared money, check to see if it’s real.
Here’s what I did…
Using the good ol’ Command+C and Command+V buttons on my Mac…I copied and pasted some of the text from the horrific email into Google to see what it would come up with and LOW AND BEHOLD…there it was, WORD FOR WORD explained on a Tech Website was the email I received from the scammer with an explanation of how he did it along with an explanation of SEXTORTION!
I was SEXTORTED!
My real account information…email address and password…was taken from something I logged into at some point over the last number of years that has obviously been compromised (we hear of these internet security breaches all the time where personal data has been exposed.) It could have come from any number of internet sites I’ve logged in on at some point or another. Unfortunately, some ARSE out there, took that information and sent me an automated email hoping that if I was watching porn…something would ring a little “true” in his email and he’d tap into my guilty conscience and fear of being exposed and humiliated in front of all of my friends, family and colleagues…and HE TRIED TO EXTORT MONEY FROM ME!
TOTAL JERK MOVE!
Since my password was compromised, I changed it in a couple of places just to be safe.
Then, despite knowing this sextortion email was a complete scam…since I was still feeling a little uneasy..I decided to take a look to see if my camera had ever been used without my knowledge to record me watching videos and turns out…IT HAS!
I found THESE photos on my computer and based on my reaction…it’s obvious I was watching porn!
With more and more people using computers for everyday tasks, scammers are getting a lot more sophisticated. Before you fall for something…CHECK FIRST!
And to be super-safe, JUST IN CASE…I placed a little piece of duct tape over the camera on my computer…’cause one can never be too sure!
PS – No dogs were harmed in the taking of these photos.
PPS – Of course I took these photos myself and didn’t just find them on my computer! Don’t believe everything you read on the internet!!
PPPS – There’s still a weeee little part of me that’s worried this post might tick off the Nigerian Prince…and he’ll post the video…just to prove he can!
Hahaahhahahahajaanja. Omg
Hubby got the same one. Imagine that….!!!
You’re pictures made me laugh so hard out loud!!!!
Hilarious! Not the part where you were scammed, but the photos of you watching porn. Love the squirt bottle. Hmmm… what might you have watched…Outlander? 🙂 They’d get lots of people for that one!
What you wrote had me laughing BUT your photos gave me a full on from the pit of my belly laugh!! I love reading your posts – they have the ability some days to change my mood completely!! 🙂
I got that one too, but without a password included. Some people!
Also – love your porn reaction shots 😉
